Berlin Christmas Market Guide (Map + Dates 2026)

Here’s what I’d tell a friend before they book a Berlin Christmas Market trip in 2026. Berlin doesn’t have just one Christmas market – there are more than 80, spread across a city that’s about nine times the size of Paris. The challenge isn’t finding a market. It’s knowing which ones are worth your time and how to visit a few without spending all day travelling between them. That’s what this guide helps you with: the best markets to visit, their confirmed 2026 opening dates, and a map showing which ones are close together so you can plan your route easily.

Berlin Christmas Market Review 2026

Berlin has over 80 Christmas markets – yep, you read that correctly, and no, it’s not a typo! Whether you’re after a nostalgic, eco-friendly, or modern urban market, you’ll find it here. Just keep in mind that many of them only pop up for a few days or a weekend during the holiday season. If it’s your first time in Berlin, I’d stick to the top 10 most popular markets. They’re open on the four weekends of Advent and easy to reach by public transport.

All the markets are free to enter, except for Gendarmenmarkt, which charges a €2 entrance fee, and the Medieval Christmas Market in Friedrichshain.

The best part is that the Berlin Christmas Market is still a bit of a hidden gem. Most tourists skip it for the more famous ones in Munich, Nuremberg, and Cologne. Plus, since it hasn’t gone viral on social media like the markets in Vienna or Prague, you won’t have to deal with such huge crowds. I was actually pleasantly surprised by how manageable the crowds were during my visit last year.

💖 My favourite hotel in Berlin: Hotel Luc
⭐ Rating: 8.8 | 820+ reviews
Location: walking distance to three winter markets and right on the U2 red line for the rest
What I loved: modern, spacious rooms and a great free sauna and steam bath

When it comes to payments, cards are becoming more common, but some stalls still only accept cash. Some sellers might even try to guilt-trip you into paying cash, claiming they get charged €1 for foreign card transactions. I ran into that twice! And don’t forget coins for the toilets – you do have to pay to use them.

My biggest tip (one that will save you both time and money) is to book a hotel near the red U2 metro line. It links all the main markets and makes getting around super easy. I stayed near Hausvogteiplatz in the Mitte district, and it was super convenient. Also, get a Berlin WelcomeCard. It gives you unlimited access to public transport across Berlin’s A, B, and C zones, including Potsdam and Berlin Brandenburg Airport.

Berlin Christmas Market Dates 2026

These are the official opening dates for the five main winter markets. For full details, opening hours and closure dates, see each market’s listing further down in the guide.

Best Christmas Markets in Berlin 2026

Berliner Weihnachtszeit am Roten Rathaus

Berliner Weihnachtszeit market at the Red Town Hall with a Christmas tree, market stalls and illuminated city hall at night
The Christmas market at the city hall – one of Berlin’s largest markets

Berliner Weihnachtszeit am Roten Rathaus is one of the biggest and busiest Christmas markets in Berlin. Set on the square between the beautifully illuminated Rotes Rathaus and St. Marienkirche, it has a truly magical atmosphere. There are around 100 stalls selling everything from handmade crafts and gifts to classic Christmas food and drinks. Right next to St. Marienkirche, you’ll even find a medieval-style craft area where you can watch artisans at work!

If it’s your first time in Germany’s capital, check out my itinerary for 3 days in Berlin. It covers all the must-see sights, plus my favourite spots for brunch and dinner.

However, the real highlight is the 50-metre-high Ferris wheel. It gives you fantastic views over Berlin, including the Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz. You’ll also find a 600-square-metre ice rink set around the beautiful Neptune Fountain.

This is where you can see Santa Claus flying through the skies on his sleigh. He appears three times a day at 4:30 PM, 6:30 PM, and 8:30 PM.

I’d recommend visiting during the day if you want to browse the stalls. Evenings get extremely crowded because of the market’s central location. I loved the food options, and this was the only Christmas market in Berlin where I found authentic Nürnberger Lebkuchen. You’ve got to try them – they’re not your usual gingerbread. Soft, nutty, and packed with warm spices, they’re a total treat!

Charlottenburg Palace Christmas Market

Charlottenburg Palace Christmas Market with illuminated palace and festive stalls at night
The Christmas Market at Charlottenburg Palace – the city’s most magical

Charlottenburg Palace Christmas Market is hands-down one of Berlin’s most magical spots. With the beautiful 18th-century Baroque palace as a backdrop, it honestly feels like stepping into a fairy tale. And let’s be real – a Christmas market with a lit-up palace as the backdrop is hard to beat.

The market has over 100 wooden stalls spread around Charlottenburg Palace’s courtyard. You’ll find everything from handmade crafts to a few mass-produced items. It gets pretty busy in the evening, but it’s still not as crowded as the markets in the main tourist spots. I’d definitely recommend going after dark – seeing the palace lit up in colourful lights is magical. If I had to pick just one winter market to visit in Berlin, it would be this one!

Don’t miss Charlottenburg Palace itself! This stunning palace used to be the home of Sophie Charlotte, the first Queen consort of Prussia. The inside is absolutely gorgeous!

The only downside is that it’s a bit out of the city centre. But don’t worry, it’s super easy to get there by taking the U-Bahn (line U2) to Sophie-Charlotte-Platz. Trust me, the extra travel time is totally worth it.

WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt

WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt with a Christmas tree, stalls, illuminated Neue Kirche and Concert Hall at night
Gendarmenmarkt – the city’s most famous Christmas market

WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt is Berlin’s most famous Christmas market, and for good reason. It sits on one of the city’s prettiest squares, surrounded by the gorgeous Concert Hall and the German and French Churches. Add a huge Christmas tree and live choir performances on the stage, and you’ve got the perfect holiday atmosphere.

Although the market is on the smaller side, it’s more upscale and full of unique crafts and treats. It’s the perfect spot if you’re hunting for gifts or souvenirs. You’ll find everything from leather and glass items to ceramics and jewellery. And you can even watch artisans at work, creating their pieces right before your eyes! I ended up buying some lovely handmade metal stamps from here.

You’ll also find plenty of gourmet treats and hot drinks. Unlike other markets, this one has cosy Christmas huts where you can sit down and enjoy traditional Italian, Austrian, and German dishes. Be sure to stop by the WeihnachtsZauberBar for some fancy drinks like Veuve Clicquot, Louis Roederer champagne, or Schlumberger sparkling wine.

WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt is one of the few Christmas markets in Berlin that charges an entrance fee. Ticket costs €2, and you can buy it at the entrance or online to skip the line. If you want to save a few euros, visit on weekdays between 12 PM and 3 PM. During this time, admission is free (except on December 24, 25, 26, and 31). On New Year’s Eve, when there’s a DJ party and a big fireworks show, tickets cost €9.

I went to the market twice. First, I visited right when it opened (free entry) to check out the stalls, and later in the evening for some mulled wine. That worked out perfectly, because even on a weekday night, it was so packed that you could barely move, let alone browse the stalls.

Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church Christmas Market

Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church Christmas Market with festive stalls, a carpet of lights and the church in the background
The Market at Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church – perfect for gifts and souvenirs

Set around the beautiful Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, this winter market is just a few steps from Berlin’s famous Kurfürstendamm. The atmosphere is truly magical, with a 400-metre carpet of twinkling lights above the stalls, a huge Christmas tree, and giant illuminated figures.

With over 100 wooden stalls full of handmade ornaments and toys, it’s a great spot to pick up gifts and souvenirs. When I first visited years ago, I picked up a cute angel ornament here. I still hang it on my tree every year – it’s become a little tradition.

The market at Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was the biggest surprise of my holiday trip. I didn’t expect much (my first visit a few years ago was pretty meh), but now it’s completely transformed! The atmosphere is pure magic, with twinkling lights and beautifully decorated stalls. I highly recommend visiting, as it’s just a 20-minute ride on the red U2 U-Bahn line.

And while you’re in the area, be sure to step inside the recently renovated Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. The interior is stunning, and best of all, it’s free to visit.

Schlossplatz Winter Market at Humboldt Forum

Night illuminations at Schlossplatz Winter Market, Humboldt Forum

Schlossplatz Winter Market is the newest addition to Berlin’s Christmas market scene. It is located in the heart of Berlin‑Mitte at Schlossplatz, the historic square in front of the Humboldt Forum. With more than 150 festively decorated stalls, the market is divided into two distinct areas, each with its own charm.

At Schlossplatz, you’ll find food stalls serving flavours from around the world. You can try everything from Jamaican specialities and pasta made in giant cheese wheels to hearty Hungarian goulash. Plus, almost all of it is served in certified organic quality. And be sure to try the Feuerzangenbowle. This flaming, spiced wine punch is as exciting to watch as it is to taste!

The real magic, however, is in the courtyard of the Humboldt Forum. Here, you’ll find handmade jewellery, soaps, candles, and Christmas ornaments. The courtyard itself is beautifully illuminated with light projections on the surrounding buildings.

Be sure not to miss the spectacular laser show, which lights up the Schlüterhof and Spreeterrassen in a stunning display. You can catch it every Tuesday and Thursday, at 6 PM in the Schlüterhof and 8 PM at the Spreeterrassen (the exterior façade).

A special highlight is the 30‑metre-long giant stollen from the Rösler bakery, which is cut on 25 November at 12 noon. Made using a traditional recipe, it contains over 50 kilograms of flour, six kilograms of sultanas, candied orange and lemon peel, and almonds.

I loved this winter market so much, I ended up visiting three times during my trip! Trust me, you’ll want to add it to your bucket list – the food and the magical atmosphere are not to be missed!

Lucia Christmas Market at the Kulturbrauerei

Lucia Christmas Market at Kulturbrauerei with festive stalls, glowing star decorations and a sign showing the distance to Stockholm
Scandinavian Lucia Christmas Market at the Kulturbrauerei

Set against the historic brick buildings of the Kulturbrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg, the Lucia Christmas Market is a favourite among locals. Named after Saint Lucia, the goddess of light, the market is dedicated to the Nordic countries and their traditions. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for something off the beaten path or want to experience the holidays the Scandinavian way. Highlights include daily visits from Father Christmas (5–6 PM) and the walking angel (8–9 PM).

Alongside the classic Christmas treats, the market offers a taste of Nordic and Scandinavian cuisine. You’ll find glögg (Scandinavian spiced mulled wine), elk goulash, reindeer bratwurst, and more. I tried the fire-roasted salmon sandwich, and honestly, it was the best I’ve had at any market. The glögg was great too – slightly sweeter than your typical mulled wine, but perfect for warming up on a chilly evening.

The only downside is that it’s a bit out of the city centre. However, getting there is easy – just hop on the red U‑bahn line U2 to Eberswalder Straße.

Lucia Weihnachtsmarkt Opening times
From 23 November to 22 December 2026
From Monday to Friday – 3 PM to 10 PM
Saturday and Sunday – 1 PM to 10 PM

Alexanderplatz Christmas Market

Alexanderplatz Christmas Market with an Ore Mountain pyramid and glowing heart-shaped tree
Alexanderplatz Christmas Market – home to Europe’s largest Ore Mountain Pyramid

The Alexanderplatz Christmas Market sits right in the heart of Berlin, on the city’s most famous square. Set beneath the iconic TV Tower (Fernsehturm), it spreads across Alexanderplatz itself, so it’s impossible to miss. It’s also one of the easiest winter villages to reach. Almost every train, tram, and U-Bahn line passes through Alexanderplatz.

There’s an open-air ice rink, a fairground ride, and even a Santa Claus party house. The real highlight, however, is the towering Christmas pyramid. It’s the largest Ore Mountain pyramid in Europe, illuminated by more than 5,000 lights! Glowing trees, decorated with hearts, complete the scene, adding to the market’s festive atmosphere.

The downside is that this market feels very commercial, with hardly any handmade or truly unique items. If you’re short on time, it’s one you can easily skip. That said, you’ll almost certainly pass through Alexanderplatz at some point, so it’s an easy stop to tick off your list.

Weihnachtsmarkt auf dem Alexanderplatz Opening times
From 23 November to 26 December 2026
Daily – 11 AM to 10 PM
Address: Alexanderplatz, 10178 Berlin, Germany

Winter World at Potsdamer Platz

Winter World at Potsdamer Platz with festive stalls and a Christmas pyramid at sunset
Christmas Pyramid at Winter World, Potsdamer Platz

Every winter, Potsdamer Platz turns into an Alpine winter village right in the heart of the city. There’s tons to do, but the real star is the giant toboggan run with amazing views of the Brandenburg Gate. You can also glide around a 600 m² covered ice rink inside the Sony Centre nearby. And if you need a break, grab some delicious Austrian treats at the wooden huts of Schmankerl or Salzburger Stiegl Alm.

That said, like the Alexanderplatz market, this one feels pretty commercial. It’s worth a visit if you’re going for fun with friends, but if not, you can easily give it a miss.

Winterwelt am Potsdamer Platz Opening times
From 31 October to 31 December 2025
Closed on Totensonntag (22 November)

24th December – until 4 PM

Medieval Christmas Market in Friedrichshain

If you’re tired of the usual neon-lit winter markets, this one is perfect. It’s set in the old RAW cultural centre in Friedrichshain, a gritty industrial space that’s now a creative hub. In winter, it turns into a cosy medieval village, with torchlight, bonfires, and historical music. Walking through it feels like stepping straight back in time.

You’ll find medieval artisans selling handmade pottery, leather goods, ironwork, and wood carvings. There are jugglers, acrobats in medieval outfits, and even a fire show! Kids can enjoy a hand‑operated wooden carousel and a wooden Ferris wheel.

The downside is that it’s a bit out of the city centre and takes a little extra effort to reach. The easiest way is to take the S‑bahn to Warschauer Straße and then walk about 5 minutes. There’s also a €4 entrance fee, though it’s free on Mondays.

Historische Weihnachtsmarkt auf dem RAW-Gelände in Friedrichshain Opening times
From 12 November to 22 December 2026
Monday to Thursday – 3 PM to 10 PM
Friday – 3 PM to 11 PM
Saturday – 12 PM to 11 PM
Sunday – 12 PM to 10 PM
24th December – until 4 PM
Address: Revaler Straße 99, 10245 Berlin, Germany

Spandau Christmas Market

Spandau Christmas Market with a Christmas tree and festive pyramid
The city’s biggest winter market – Spandau Christmas Market

The biggest Christmas market in Berlin takes over Spandau’s Old Town, a charming suburb on the city’s outskirts. On weekdays, you’ll find around 250 stalls, and on weekends, that number jumps to over 400. Right in the heart of it all is a stunning pyramid and a Christmas tree twinkling with thousands of lights. You’ll also find a nostalgic Ferris wheel just outside Spandau Town Hall.

Wednesdays are all about family, so it’s the best time to grab a photo with Santa Claus. There’s also live music on stage every Friday at 6 PM and on weekends at 4 PM.

The downside is that it’s quite far from the city centre (about an hour by S-Bahn or U-Bahn). Honestly, I don’t think it’s worth the trip. I’d been wanting to visit this market for years, so maybe my expectations were just too high. For me, it wasn’t special enough to justify the extra travel time. That said, if you’re looking for a winter market off the beaten path, this one’s a gem. I saw mostly locals, almost no tourists, and even on the weekend, it wasn’t crowded at all!

While planning my trip, I came across mentions of a second winter market in Spandau – at the Spandau Citadel. Unfortunately, I was disappointed to learn it hasn’t been happening for the past few years. Most travel blogs still mention it, so don’t make the same mistake I did – save yourself the trip!

Spandauer Weihnachtsmarkt Opening times
From 23 November to 23 December 2026
Sunday to Thursday – 11 AM to 8 PM
Friday and Saturday – 11 AM to 10 PM
Address: Marktstraße 4A, 13597 Berlin, Germany

What to do in Berlin at Christmas

Ice skating and tobogganing

If you love a bit of winter action, Berlin’s Christmas markets have you covered.

For ice skating, there are two spots in Berlin you shouldn’t miss – Berliner Weihnachtszeit at Rotes Rathaus and the Alexanderplatz Christmas Market. The first has a 600 m² outdoor rink around the glowing Neptune Fountain. And honestly, this market is a must-visit anyway. Alexanderplatz is a bit more commercial, but the rink there is just as fun, with twinkling trees and the TV tower as a dramatic backdrop.

For tobogganing, head to Winter World at Potsdamer Platz. The toboggan run is about 12 metres high and roughly 70 metres long, making it one of the biggest mobile slides in Europe. Plus, it offers great views toward the Brandenburg Gate as you slide down. Right nearby, you’ll also find a 600 m² covered ice rink inside the Sony Centre.

Shop for Christmas ornaments

For one-of-a-kind Christmas ornaments, head to Käthe Wohlfahrt and Bürgelhaus. They are perfect places to find unique treasures you won’t see anywhere else.

I discovered Käthe Wohlfahrt years ago, and it’s been my favourite ever since. This iconic Christmas brand has been creating traditional ornaments and decorations since 1960. They’re especially known for their wooden nutcrackers and delicate glass baubles, many of which are handmade in the Erzgebirge region. I never leave the store without adding a new ornament to my collection or at least picking up some festive incense.

You’ll usually find them at the larger Christmas markets, but if not, their store at the address below is the place to go.

Käthe Wohlfahrt
Address: An der Spandauer Brücke 7 – Am Hackeschen Markt, 10178 Berlin

On the other side, Bürgelhaus specialises in traditional hand-painted Christmas ornaments from Thüringen. I stumbled upon this charming shop completely by accident during my last trip. Inside, you’ll find a wonderful selection of Bürgel ceramics and Ore Mountain folk art. If you’re into authentic German nutcrackers, cuckoo clocks, or smokers, this place is a must. I also picked up some incense with forest and moss aromas, and absolutely loved it.

Bürgelhaus
Address: Friedrichstraße 58, 10117 Berlin, Germany

Chocolate shopping

Chocolate and Christmas go hand in hand, and Berlin is no exception. If you’re after some of the best German chocolate, Rausch Schokoladenhaus is the place to go. Their nougat and marzipan are my absolute favourites.

This family-run spot has been around since 1918, and their flagship store at Gendarmenmarkt is huge. In fact, it’s one of the largest chocolate houses in the world! Inside, you’ll find more than 250 kinds of chocolate treats (pralines, truffles, bars), all along the longest praline counter on earth! And you have to check out their huge chocolate sculptures of the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag!

Chocolate Brandenburg Gate at Rausch Schokoladenhaus in Berlin
Chocolate Brandenburg Gate at Rausch Schokoladenhaus

Another favourite of mine is Läderach. When it comes to chocolate, this Swiss brand is hard to beat. Their fresh chocolate is absolutely delicious. Make sure to try the milk chocolate with hazelnuts or the white chocolate with pistachios, orange peel, and almonds.

Berlin Christmas market food

German Christmas markets never disappoint when it comes to food and drinks, and Berlin is no exception. Here are a few treats I tried that I’d definitely recommend.

Glühwein

Glühwein is basically the go-to drink at Christmas markets. It’s mulled red or white wine with spices like cinnamon, vanilla, cloves, citrus, and a bit of sugar. If you want something stronger, try Glühwein mit Schuss – that’s mulled wine with a shot of liquor. I loved adding a splash of amaretto to my white Glühwein.

The wine comes in a cute, decorated mug, and each market has its own design. You’ll pay a small extra deposit for the mug, which is why your bill might be a few euros higher than expected. You can either keep the mug as a souvenir or return it to get your deposit back.

My tip: The best market for enjoying mulled wine is the Schlossplatz Winter Market at Humboldt Forum. The Glühwein is seriously good, and the atmosphere is pure magic – with real fires and twinkling lights everywhere.

Bratwurst

Bratwurst is a grilled sausage served in a bun, usually with your choice of ketchup, mustard, or mayo. It’s one of the most popular foods at Christmas markets and in my view, absolutely delicious.

Flammlachs

Flammlachs is another favourite of mine. It’s salmon roasted over an open flame on wooden boards, giving it a smoky flavour. Usually, it’s served in a bun (like bratwurst) with quark cheese or cabbage salad.

My tip: For the best salmon, head to Lucia Christmas Market. I tried it at a few markets, but this was my favourite. Overall, I found the food there to be of higher quality than at the others.

Handbrot

Handbrot is a savoury bread filled with melted cheese, ham or mushrooms. It’s often served with a spoonful of sour cream – and in my view, it’s absolutely delicious.

My tip: You can find it at the winter markets by Charlottenburg Palace and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church.

Strudel

At Berlin Christmas markets, you’ll usually find two types of strudel: Mohnstrudel and Nussstrudel. Honestly, I can’t choose a favourite – I love them both! Mohnstrudel is a sweet poppy-seed pastry, while Nußstrudel is filled with nuts like hazelnuts or walnuts.
