Best Classical Concerts in Vienna (Must-See 2026)

No trip to Vienna is truly complete without experiencing a live classical music concert. But with so many options, from grand opera houses and Mozart performances to candlelit concerts in historic palaces, choosing the right one can be overwhelming. That’s why I’ve put together this guide to the best classical concerts in Vienna, including my top picks for first-timers. Whether you’re a classical music lover or just looking for a memorable night out, these are the performances that you shouldn’t miss.

My favourite classical concert in Vienna

My very first classical music concert in Vienna was years ago at the Summer Night Concert Schönbrunn, and it was an experience I’ll never forget. If you’re visiting Vienna in summer, this is one event you shouldn’t miss. In fact, it’s worth planning your trip around it, but more on that further down in this guide. Since then, I’ve attended several classical concerts during my many visits to Vienna.

However, there is one experience that has really stayed with me and that I always recommend to first-time visitors. It’s Vivaldi’s Four Seasons Concert at Karlskirche. It’s not just because you get to hear Vivaldi’s famous Four Seasons performed live, but also because the setting is absolutely beautiful. Plus, the dress code is smart casual, so there’s no need to worry about squeezing a formal outfit or evening dress into your luggage.

💖 My favourite concert in Vienna: Vivaldi’s Four Seasons Concert at Karlskirche
⭐ Rating: 4.7 | 17,100+ reviews
What I loved: the stunning Baroque church setting and talented musicians

The concert takes place in St. Charles Church (Karlskirche), the city’s most beautiful Baroque church, richly decorated with colourful frescoes. Performed by Orchestra 1756, who play on authentic classical instruments, the concert feels like stepping back in time.

The location itself holds a special connection to Vivaldi. He composed his masterpiece, the Four Seasons, just a few years before moving from Italy to Vienna. Vivaldi spent his final years in the Austrian capital and was laid to rest near St. Charles Church.

Best classical concerts in Vienna

While in Vienna, you’ll notice plenty of street sellers dressed as Mozart offering classical concert tickets. Although the prices might seem low, these concerts often turn out to be tourist traps. They usually take place in small, modest venues and are performed by younger musicians with less experience. Simply put, they rarely live up to the price you pay. For that reason, I personally wouldn’t recommend buying tickets from street sellers.

I usually book concerts through GetYourGuide, where you can check plenty of reviews and see if a concert is actually worth it. Another great option is Classictic, which offers a wide selection of classical concerts, including some unique venues around Vienna.

Most concert venues in Vienna require at least smart casual attire. So it’s best to leave the flip-flops, yoga pants, and hiking or gym shoes at home. I’ve seen all of these at some of the more touristy concerts I attended, and honestly, they don’t really fit the atmosphere. That said, don’t worry about dressing up too much. The dress code is usually not strictly enforced, especially since many concerts are aimed at tourists. Still, it’s best to dress a little nicer, as there’s a chance you could be turned away if your outfit is too casual.

Visiting Vienna for the first time? Then take a look at my 3-day Vienna itinerary. It covers all the must-see sights, hidden gems, and my personal favourite spots for authentic Wiener schnitzel.

Also, make sure to get there around 30 minutes before the concert starts. For some venues, especially churches or smaller halls, seats aren’t assigned. This means the earlier you arrive, the better your chance of picking the perfect seat.

Mozart concert at the Musikverein

📍Location: Golden Hall of Musikverein ⭐ Rating: 4.6 | 5,700+ reviews

This concert takes place in the Musikverein, one of Vienna’s most famous concert halls. Opened in 1870, it’s home to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and is renowned worldwide for its exceptional acoustics. The Musikverein’s highlight is the Golden Hall, named for its gilded decorations and crystal chandeliers. It’s where the iconic New Year’s Concert takes place. Another notable space is the Brahms Hall, smaller but just as elegant, with warm wood panelling and detailed artwork.

During this concert, you’ll experience some of Mozart’s greatest symphonies, arias, and operas, beautifully performed by the Wien Mozart Orchestra. This orchestra was founded in 1986 by some of Vienna’s finest musicians. They specialise in performing Mozart’s masterpieces, bringing the 18th century to life by wearing authentic historical costumes and wigs. It feels like taking a journey back in time!

On one of my recent trips to Vienna, I had the chance to attend a rehearsal of this concert. It was truly unforgettable to experience these timeless classics once again, especially in such a stunning setting!

Classical Concert at St. Anne’s Church

📍Location: Annakirche ⭐ Rating: 4.6 | 3,740+ reviews

The concert is held in St. Anne’s Church (Annakirche). This small but gorgeous Baroque church is beautifully decorated with colourful frescoes and pink marble columns. Its outstanding acoustics and intimate atmosphere make it an ideal venue for live classical music.

The program includes favourite classical pieces by Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven. You’ll hear these classics brought to life by a talented string ensemble playing on authentic period instruments.

Mozart and Strauss Concert at Schönbrunn

📍Location: Schönbrunn Palace ⭐ Rating: 4.5 | 3,450+ reviews

The concert takes place in the stunning Orangery at Schönbrunn Palace. It is one of the two largest Baroque orangeries in the world (the other is at Versailles!). This grand hall was once the backdrop for glamorous imperial banquets and concerts. It even hosted a famous musical showdown between Mozart and the court composer Antonio Salieri. Imagine sitting where royalty once listened to Mozart himself perform!

Today, the tradition lives on. In this special setting, you can enjoy a classical concert with some of the best music by Mozart and Johann Strauss – from polkas to beautiful arias and waltzes. The music is performed by the Schönbrunn Palace Festival Orchestra, a renowned chamber orchestra.

Classical Concert at Mozart’s First House

📍Location: Mozarthaus ⭐ Rating: 4.7 | 2,720+ reviews

This intimate concert takes place in the charming Sala Terrena at Mozarthaus Vienna. The name means ground-floor hall in Italian, and this historic space was once part of a Teutonic Order monastery. Dating back to the 12th century, it’s actually the oldest concert hall in the city! Inside, you’ll find beautiful frescoes covering the walls, from mythical stories to floral and animal designs.

Back in 1781, Mozart lived right here in the monastery while working for Archbishop Colloredo. And he gave several private concerts in this very Sala Terrena! Today, you can enjoy some of the best music from Vienna’s Classical era, performed by the Mozart Ensemble Vienna in this historic setting.

Classical Concert at Eschenbach Palace

📍Location: Eschenbach Palace ⭐ Rating: 4.7 | 830+ reviews

This concert takes place in the stunning Golden Ballroom of Palais Eschenbach. Inaugurated in 1872 by Emperor Franz Joseph I himself, it is one of the city’s most beautiful palaces. The grand banquet hall of the palace, known as the Golden Ballroom, is richly decorated with wood panelling and tapestries.

The program features music by Mozart, Schubert, and Strauss, performed by the amazing Vienna Supreme Orchestra. You’ll hear a mix of orchestral pieces, romantic arias, waltzes and polkas that truly capture the spirit of Vienna.

Classical Concert at the Minorite Church

📍Location: Minoritenkirche ⭐ Rating: 4.7 | 730+ reviews

The concert takes place in the Minorite Church, right in the heart of the historic city centre. This beautiful Gothic building dates back to the 13th century, making it one of Vienna’s oldest churches!

Concerts here happen just 2 to 3 days a week, usually on weekends. But if you’re in the city when one is on, I’d definitely recommend going. You’ll experience programs and artists that usually perform only in the world’s top concert halls! The repertoire changes regularly, featuring favourites like Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, Bach’s Mass in B Minor, and special festive concerts during the Christmas season.

Seasonal Classical Concerts in Vienna

If you’re visiting Vienna in the summer or around Christmas, you’re in for a real treat when it comes to classical music. The city truly shines during these seasons, especially if you get the chance to hear the world-famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra live. Here are some of the most popular seasonal concerts you won’t want to miss while you’re in town.

Summer Night Concert Schönbrunn

Each June, the imperial Schönbrunn Palace host the Vienna Philharmonic for their annual Summer Night Concert. Set in Schönbrunn’s beautiful gardens with the illuminated palace or Gloriette glowing in the background, the scene feels straight out of a fairy tale. Imagine yourself listening to Mozart or Tchaikovsky under the stars, surrounded by centuries of history! Held every year since 2004, it’s easily one of the city’s most magical and unforgettable events!

And the best part? It’s completely free! There’s no dress code and no need to reserve in advance, just show up and enjoy. If you want a good spot near the stage, I’d recommend arriving about three hours early, as it does get crowded quickly.

The official info says the concert can’t be heard from the meadow behind the stage, near the Gloriette. But when I visited, that area was packed with people, so you might still hear the concert from there, though the sound quality could be a bit weaker. My advice is to arrive early and grab a spot in front of the stage for the best experience.

If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the concert can be postponed by a day or two. So, if this event is a highlight of your trip, try to plan with a few extra days before your flight home, just in case. Next year, the Summer Night Concert will take place on Friday, June 11, 2027.

I went to this concert a few years ago, and it left a lasting impression on me. Now, I’m planning a trip back to Vienna just to experience it again. It’s one of those rare travel moments that really stays with you – pure magic under the stars.

Christmas & New Year’s Concert at St. Peter’s Church

During the Christmas season, from early December to early January, you can enjoy a special concert series at St. Peter’s Church (Peterskirche). This gorgeous 18th-century Baroque church, with stunning frescoes, is beautifully decorated for the holidays. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy classical music and get into the holiday spirit while in town.

The program includes classics like Eine kleine Nachtmusik, The Four Seasons, and beautiful pieces by Mozart, Bach, and Schubert. If you’re in Vienna during December, this concert is an absolute must-see!

The Christmas Concert at St. Peter’s Church is very popular, so I recommend booking your concert tickets ahead of time.

Vienna New Year’s Concert

I can’t talk about Vienna’s music scene without mentioning this concert (even though tickets are tough to get). The Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert is one of the most famous classical music events worldwide. Every January 1st, it takes place in the stunning Golden Hall of the Musikverein. It’s a beloved tradition dating back to 1939!

However, getting tickets to this world-famous concert can be a real challenge. The Vienna Philharmonic uses a lottery system, and you can only apply through their official website during February each year. For the 2026/27 season, you can apply between February 1 and 28, 2026.

If you’re not lucky enough to get a ticket, don’t worry, you can still enjoy the concert live on TV. It’s broadcast on ORF 2 and Ö1 and is available in over 90 countries. In fact, watching this concert on TV has become my own New Year’s Day tradition, even if I haven’t been able to attend in person!

If you do manage to get a ticket, remember that the dress code is quite strict – formal evening attire is required. Make sure to dress up for the occasion!
