Where to Stay in London (Best Hotels + Areas Guide)

A complete guide to where to stay in London for the first time (+ the best areas and hotels for sightseeing, nightlife, shopping and Christmas).

Choosing where to stay in London when you first visit the city will make a big difference in your trip. There are over 30 neighbourhoods, and each of them will give you a completely different experience of the English capital. To save you from having to spend ages trying to find the best place to stay in London, I wrote this detailed guide. Besides the best areas for sightseeing, shopping, nightlife and Christmas, you’ll find recommended hotels for each area.

Where I stayed in London

During my first trip to London, I chose to stay in the western part of the City of London. It’s a historic district located north of the River Thames, home to many historic and cultural landmarks, such as St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Tower of London. Also, I was just a 10-minute stroll from Covent Garden, with its endless choice of restaurants and cosy pubs.

💖 My favourite hotel in London: Apex Temple Court Hotel
⭐ Rating: 9.0 | 4,410+ reviews
Perfect for: sightseeing – walking distance to the British Museum and a metro station
What I loved: spacious quiet rooms, a lovely restaurant and a bar
Check details & prices: Booking.com | Expedia

Before my first visit to London, I was prepared for the worst – a tiny hotel room, probably even smaller than the one I had in Paris. That is, unless I was willing to spend a fortune. So I was genuinely surprised when I discovered the Apex Temple Court Hotel. Even their smallest rooms were spacious (huge by London standards) and reasonably priced.

The location couldn’t have been better for sightseeing, right in the heart of the city and just a short walk from Covent Garden, my favourite area to stay in. One charming touch I especially loved – every room comes with a little rubber duck you can take home as a souvenir!

Tips for booking a hotel in London

Public transport proximity – London is a huge city, so even if you choose a central location, you’ll have to use public transportation to get around. So, make sure your hotel is close to a metro (or at least a bus) station with lots of different lines. This will give you easy access to the sights you want to see. Metro is a better option, as buses could be slower due to traffic.

Visiting London for the first time? Then take a look at my complete itinerary for 4 days in London, which covers all the popular attractions and my favourite restaurants.

Room size – rooms, in general, are relatively small (still better than the ones in Paris). Don’t expect a sitting area or a working desk. Always check the room size before booking your accommodation. Of course, it’s possible to find larger rooms, but they come at a higher price.

West End – where to stay in London first time

London is a huge city, so picking the right neighbourhood to stay in can really make or break your trip. Here’s a quick tip to get you started – the Thames River runs right through the heart of the city, dividing it into north and south. If it’s your first time in London, I’d recommend staying on the north side, in Zone 1. That’s where most of the must-see sights are, think Big Ben, the British Museum, and the Tower of London, all within easy reach.

Staying in Zone 1 helps you save money on metro (Tube) tickets because most of the city’s main attractions are located within this central zone. When you travel only inside Zone 1, fares are cheaper and you avoid extra costs that come with crossing into outer zones.

That said, the north bank is a pretty broad term, so let’s break it down a bit more. The north side of the Thames can be divided into three main districts – the West End, the East End, and the City of London. The West End is the city’s main entertainment and shopping district, known for its theatres, cinemas, and shopping streets like Oxford Street and Regent Street. The East End used to be a working-class area, but now it’s full of cool street art, markets, and great food from all over the world.

Located right between them, you’ll find the City of London. This relatively small area, often just called the City or the Square Mile, is the historic and financial heart of the city. It is home to the Bank of England, the London Stock Exchange, and many iconic landmarks like St Paul’s Cathedral and the Tower of London.

If it’s your first time in London, I highly recommend staying in the West End. It’s the city’s most central area, and from here you can easily walk to the British Museum, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and the London Eye. Plus, with Soho and Covent Garden right in the West End, you’ll have plenty of fantastic restaurants and great nightlife just steps away.

Don’t miss out! Book your skip-the-line tickets for the London Eye and the Tower of London. With over 3 million a year, lines are huge – save hours and get straight inside.

Why stay in the West End for first-timers

  • thanks to its central location, the West End is the perfect area for first-timers
  • walking distance to numerous big attractions (such as the British Museum, Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and the London Eye)
  • convenient access to Heathrow Airport and King’s Cross St Pancras using the Piccadilly metro line
where stay london first time

If it’s your first time visiting London, I’d strongly recommend staying in the West End. It’s the ideal spot for sightseeing, with countless historic landmarks and a great selection of restaurants just steps away.

However, keep in mind that hotels in the West End tend to be a bit pricier and often have smaller rooms. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, consider staying just outside the West End. In my opinion, the best alternatives are Westminster and the City of London (where I stayed on my first trip years ago). You’ll find better prices and more spacious rooms while still being within walking distance of most major attractions.

Covent Garden – best area to stay in London for tourists

The West End is one of the best areas to stay in London, whether you’re a first-time visitor, a tourist, or here to enjoy the nightlife. That said, the West End covers a fairly large area. It stretches roughly from Oxford Street in the north to the River Thames in the south, and from Hyde Park Corner in the west to Holborn in the east. In fact, the West End includes several neighbourhoods like Soho, Covent Garden, and Mayfair. Thus, depending on where exactly your hotel is, you might find yourself spending more time getting to the main sights than you’d like.

That’s why, if you want to be within a 30-minute walk of almost everything, I recommend staying in Covent Garden. The only major sights outside that range are the Tower of London and London Bridge, which are located in the East End. But given how vast London is and how spread out the attractions are, it’s impossible to be within walking distance of everything. Even if you’re staying in a central area, you’ll still need to rely on the city’s excellent underground system, known as the Tube, to get around.

Covent Garden is known for its vibrant dining and theatre scene, and it’s close to popular spots like Trafalgar Square, the British Museum, and the London Eye. Right in the city’s heart, it makes a great base for exploring on foot. Plus, you’re just a short walk from several Tube stations, including the Piccadilly line, which takes you straight to Heathrow Airport and King’s Cross St Pancras for Eurostar trains.

The area itself is very charming with lots of pedestrian-friendly streets lined with fashionable cafes, small theatres and high-end boutiques. However, the heart of the neighbourhood is its cobbled piazza and restored 19th-century market with a stunning iron and glass roof that covers the central market hall. The market features unique shops and stalls, ranging from luxury fashion brands to independent sellers of antiques, food and crafts.

Why stay in Covent Garden as a tourist

  • Covent Garden is the most convenient area for tourists due to its central location in the West End
  • within a 30-minute walk of numerous big attractions (the British Museum, Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and the London Eye)
  • convenient access to Heathrow Airport and King’s Cross St Pancras using the Piccadilly metro line
  • great dining options from casual cafes (such as Victoria House Coffee & Food or St. John Bakery Neal’s Yard) to high-end restaurants
  • the area is home to several world-famous theatres, like the Royal Opera House, the Duchess Theatre, the Lyceum Theatre and the London Coliseum
