Old Town – best area to stay in Strasbourg for sightseeing

The best area to stay in Strasbourg is the Old Town (the historic city centre), also known as the Grande Île. The Old Town, with its half-timbered houses and picturesque canals, is the city’s most charming area. Here you’ll find some of the city’s iconic landmarks, including the Strasbourg Cathedral and La Petite France.

Located at the heart of the city, the Grande Île (meaning big island in French) is surrounded by the Ill River. The river splits into several channels, creating an island-like effect. The area is relatively small, covering about 1.2 square kilometres (0.46 square miles), but it is packed with cultural and architectural treasures.

Grande Île (the Old Town) is very compact, making it easy to explore on foot. Staying in the historic centre means you can walk to attractions, museums, and shops without needing to use any transportation at all.

Best hotels near the Strasbourg train station

Strasbourg’s main train station (Strasbourg-Ville station) is a major transportation hub in eastern France. It is situated about a 10-minute walk from the Old Town (Grande Île). Stay outside the Old Town of Strasbourg if you’re travelling by car

Best hotels in Strasbourg with parking

If you’re travelling by car, I’d recommend you stay outside the Old Town (Grande Île). A lot of areas of the historic centre are pedestrian-only, making driving difficult. Moreover, during the Christmas market, access to the Grande Île is strictly regulated, and parking is prohibited. Also, many hotels in the Old Town don’t have their own parking, so you’ll need to park in one of the expensive car parks nearby.

If you still prefer to be close to everything, you can leave your car in any of the numerous parking lots near the Grande Île and stay in the Old Town. Find out more info about parking and available parking lots here.

There is an outdoor parking lot and a private closed garage, where you can charge your electric or hybrid vehicle. Be sure to visit Brasserie des Haras for French culinary classics or Alsatian specialities.
