Choosing where to stay in Vienna looks easy until you realise there are more than 20 districts and hundreds of hotels. It’s easy to book somewhere that looks central on the map, but leaves you spending more time on public transport than you expected. Here’s exactly where I recommend staying in Vienna for first-timers, including the best areas and my top hotel picks in each.
My favourite hotel in Vienna
Vienna is one of my favourite cities, and after countless visits, I’ve stayed in almost every part of the city centre – from Leopoldstadt and Wieden to the grand hotels along the Ringstrasse. So trust me on this one – no other neighbourhood comes close to Old Town (Innere Stadt, the 1st District) and the Ringstrasse that surrounds it. It’s the most central area in the city, you can walk to all the main sights, and you’ll find fantastic restaurants and shops right at your doorstep. For a first visit especially, there’s no better base.
💖 My favourite hotel in Vienna: Das Tyrol Hotel
Location: on the edge of the historic city centre, within easy walking distance of the main sights
What I loved: quiet modern rooms, great private spa with sauna
I discovered Hotel Das Tyrol during one of my recent visits and loved the location so much that I’ve stayed there every time since. I even used it as a base to explore the Christmas markets, and it was perfect for that. The hotel is right on the border of the Innere Stadt and Neubau districts, so you get easy access to all the popular tourist attractions and restaurants in the 1st District, plus some charming local spots in Neubau. It’s a fantastic choice for first-timers!

Innere Stadt – where to stay in Vienna first time
Vienna is made up of 23 districts (Bezirk), and the lower the district number, the closer it is to the city centre. You can determine the district of any neighbourhood by checking its postcode. For example, postcode 1020 corresponds to the 2nd district, and postcode 1150 refers to the 15th district. So, if you’re ever unsure about a hotel’s location, a quick glance at the postcode will tell you exactly where it is.

Major attractions like St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Hofburg Palace, and the Vienna State Opera are just a short walk away. And since everything is so easily accessible, you won’t need to depend much on public transport.

Located in a historic building in Vienna’s first district, these lovely apartments come with fully equipped modern kitchenettes. Breakfast is available at the nearby Café Engländer or can be brought to your room. Plus, there’s garage parking just next door.
Innere Stadt (1st District) is the historic centre of Vienna and truly the city’s heart. If you look at a map, you’ll notice this area is encircled by a grand boulevard known as the Ringstrasse (Ring Boulevard). Built in the mid-19th century after the old city walls were taken down, the Ringstrasse is one of the city’s most iconic streets. The avenue is lined with impressive historic buildings like the Parliament Building, Vienna City Hall, and Vienna University. The Ringstrasse consists of several smaller boulevards, each ending with Ring, such as Burgring, Opernring, Kärntnerring, and Universitätsring.

Why stay in Innere Stadt for first-timers
- Innere Stadt (1st District) is the city’s most central district, full of old-world charm, making it an ideal choice for first-time visitors
- walking distance to popular tourist sights such as Imperial Palace, St. Stephen’s Cathedral and State Opera House
- home to Graben and Kohlmarkt shopping streets, both famous for their luxury boutiques and high-end stores
- two of the city’s metro lines (U1 and U3) intersect at Stephansplatz, giving you easy access to pretty much everywhere you’d want to go
Innere Stadt (1st District) is also the city’s most beautiful area. If you’re after that classic Viennese charm, this is the place to stay. With its cobbled streets, famous cafés, luxury boutiques, and grand buildings, it really feels like stepping back in time.

Stephansplatz – best area to stay in Vienna for tourists
Innere Stadt (1st District) is the perfect base for first-time visitors. Since it’s a pretty large area, though, you might end up walking 20 minutes or more to get to some of the farther attractions. That’s why I always recommend staying near Stephansplatz if you want to be just steps away from all the main sights.
Stephansplatz is right in the heart of Innere Stadt (1st District) and is one of the city’s most iconic squares. It’s named after St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom), which dominates the area. This cathedral is a stunning example of Gothic architecture, dating back to the 12th century. Plus, you’ll find the famous shopping streets, Kärntnerstraße and Graben, just around the corner.
Also, Stephansplatz is a key transportation hub with direct access to the U1 and U3 metro lines. The U3 line takes you to Wien Mitte, where you can catch the City Airport Train (CAT) to the airport. Meanwhile, the U1 line connects you to Wien Hauptbahnhof, the central train station.
Why stay near Stephansplatz as a tourist
- Stephansplatz is the most convenient area for tourists, as it’s considered the geographical heart of the city
- you’ll be just about a 10-minute walk away from iconic attractions like the Hofburg, Kunsthistorisches Museum, and the Spanish Riding School
- easy access to anywhere in the city with the U1 and U3 metro lines crossing at Stephansplatz

Singerstrasse 21-25 Aparthotel – Best apartments
Singerstrasse 21-25 Aparthotel is a great option for a comfortable stay. The apartments are modern and come with fully equipped kitchens, so you can easily cook your own meals. The location is perfect – on a quiet side street, just steps from Stephansplatz metro station. Plus, cleaning is provided every third day.

Karlsplatz – where to stay in Vienna for Christmas Market
Vienna is truly magical in December. It’s hands down my favourite European capital to visit during the Christmas season. The whole place feels like a winter wonderland with stunning decorations, and there are over ten Christmas markets to explore. The main markets at the Rathaus, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and Maria-Theresien-Platz are definitely my top picks. The only one that’s a bit farther from the city centre is at Schönbrunn Palace, but it’s totally worth the visit!
The best area to stay in Vienna for Christmas markets is around Karlsplatz. This iconic square is named after the beautiful Karlskirche (St. Charles Church), a stunning Baroque masterpiece. By staying here, you’ll be within walking distance of several Christmas markets, including those at Karlsplatz, Stephansplatz, and Maria-Theresien-Platz. You can explore several holiday markets without spending time on travel!
Another advantage of staying near Karlsplatz is that it’s a major transportation hub. Three of the city’s metro lines (U1, U2, and U4) meet at Karlsplatz station. This means you’re just a short ride away from the markets at the Rathaus and Schönbrunn Palace. I can’t stress enough how important it is to be within walking distance (or a short metro ride) of the Christmas markets. Vienna is as beautiful as it is freezing in the winter, and you won’t want to spend too much time walking between markets in the cold.
Check out my Vienna Christmas Market review, where I’ve covered everything you need to plan your holiday trip, along with my favourite markets.
Why stay near Karlsplatz for the Christmas Market
- Karlsplatz is the most convenient area to stay for the Christmas markets, with five markets all within a 10-minute walk
- within walking distance of the Christmas markets at Karlskirche, Belvedere Palace, Stephansplatz, Maria-Theresien-Platz, and Spittelberg
- Karlsplatz metro station offers easy access to other Christmas markets, with U2 taking you to Rathaus market and U4 to Schönbrunn market

Most romantic hotels in Vienna (with spa)
Vienna is such a romantic city. It’s got this beautiful blend of grand palaces and charming cobblestone streets that just feels magical. Walking through the historic city centre feels like stepping back in time, with elegant cafés, horse-drawn carriages, and royal palaces around every corner. It’s a place where romance is everywhere you look.
If you’re heading to Vienna for a romantic getaway or honeymoon, you’re in for something truly special. The city has some of the most romantic hotels, many set in beautiful, centuries-old palaces. With everything from luxurious spas to fine dining options, these places are perfect for relaxing and creating memories together.
Here are the most romantic hotels in Vienna (with a spa centre).
Hotel Sans Souci – Most popular
Hotel Sans Souci is in a perfect location, right across from the Museum Quarter and just a short walk from the Imperial Palace and Volkstheater metro station. The spa is a real treat, with a bio sauna, a regular sauna, a steam bath, and an indoor pool. The hotel also has a fantastic restaurant, Veranda Brasserie (Austrian and international cuisine), along with a stylish cocktail bar, Le Salon.
Hotel Sacher – Best rated
Located right across from the State Opera, Hotel Sacher is the city’s most iconic hotel. Opened in 1876, it’s the birthplace of the famous Sacher-Torte. As a guest, you’ll get priority access to Café Sacher, so you can skip the long lines. For dinner, you can choose between the Rote Bar and Grüne Bar, both serving Viennese and international dishes. The spa is also great, with a sauna and steam bath, but the highlight is their Time to Chocolate beauty treatments!
Hotel Imperial – Most romantic
Even though this hotel doesn’t have a spa, I couldn’t leave it out. Set in a stunning 19th-century palace, it truly feels like staying in a royal residence, perfect for a romantic getaway. Also, you’ll find a great international restaurant, Opus, and for traditional Austrian dishes, Café Imperial Wien is the place to go.

Best hotels near Wien Hauptbahnhof
Wien Hauptbahnhof (Vienna Central Station) is one of the busiest stations in Austria. It offers connections to multiple countries, with high-speed trains like Railjet and ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways). The station is right between the Wieden (4th district) and Favoriten (10th district), and it’s just a quick 10-minute metro ride to St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
While you have quick direct access to the city centre via the U1 metro line, the station is a bit far from everything else. The area is mostly residential and doesn’t have the charm of the historic centre, though it is safe. For that reason, I wouldn’t recommend staying here unless you’re just passing through for one night or need to catch an early train.
If you’re staying more than one night and want quick access to Wien Hauptbahnhof, I’d suggest finding a place near a U1 metro station. That way, you’ll still be just a short ride from the central station but in a nicer area.
Still, if you need accommodation close to the train station, here are the best hotels near Wien Hauptbahnhof.
Novotel Hauptbahnhof – Nearest to Wien Hauptbahnhof
Perfect for a one-night stay, right across from the central train station and close to Südtiroler Platz metro station (U1 line). The rooms are modern and spacious, with comfy beds. There’s also a spa with a sauna and steam bath, plus a lovely restaurant, The Flave, on-site.
Mooons – Best 4-star
This hotel is just a short walk from the central train station and Südtiroler Platz metro station (U1 line takes you directly to St. Stephen’s Cathedral). The breakfast is great, served in a garden with a focus on regional and seasonal products. Don’t miss the rooftop bar, which offers panoramic views of the city.
Hyatt Regency – Best 5-star
If you’re looking for a luxurious stay, Hyatt Regency is the way to go. The hotel overlooks the Belvedere Gardens and is just a short walk from the train station. It has a great spa, complete with a sauna and steam bath. Be sure to stop by the Aurora Rooftop Bar for cocktails and enjoy some Austrian cuisine at Eugen21 & Terrace.
Motel One Wien-Hauptbahnhof – Best 3-star
This is a fantastic, affordable choice right across from the central train station. The rooms are modern and stylish, with comfy beds. As always with Motel One, the breakfast offers a great selection of delicious options.

Best hotels near Vienna Airport
Vienna International Airport (Flughafen Wien-Schwechat) is about 18 kilometres (11 miles) southeast of the city centre. It’s well-connected to the city by the City Airport Train (CAT), which only takes 16 minutes. You can also take the S7 suburban train (around 25 minutes) or grab a taxi, which costs around €60.
I’d suggest staying near the airport only if you have an early or late flight. While it’s well-connected to the city, it still takes more than half an hour to reach the main attractions, and the area around the airport is mostly industrial. But if you need a place to stay nearby, here are the best hotels close to Vienna Airport.
NH Vienna Airport Conference Center – Best 4-star
This hotel is perfect if you’re flying in or out of Vienna, as it’s right across from the arrivals hall. The spa, with a sauna and steam bath, is great for relaxing. The breakfast, starting at 5:30 AM, is ideal for early flights. Plus, the Mundo Restaurant offers a tasty mix of traditional Austrian and international dishes.
Moxy Vienna Airport – Best 3-star
This is a great, affordable hotel just a 10-minute walk from the airport terminals through a tunnel. Breakfast starts at 6 AM, and there’s also a 24-hour cocktail bar with snacks to enjoy anytime.
